Engaging Paddlesports Enthusiasts & Sharing Safety Messaging

Social media and augmented reality applications have provided effective tools for state and federal agencies to communicate with to those who recreate on waterways. This presentation will focus on outreach efforts in Indiana and nationally that are targeted to engage young audiences regarding the safety at dams, particularly low head dams. Statistics indicate that paddlesports is one of the fastest growing recreational activities in the U.S., resulting in more people on our waterways. The corollary to this trend is that more people will encounter the hazards and risks associated with waterway use. Log jams, strainers, rock ledges and boulders create natural challenges to paddlers. However, cultural imprints on our waterways like low head dams, bridge piers, and narrowing channels have amplified the risks.

This presentation will describe a series of multi-media messages and map application tools that have been developed by DNR Conservation Officers and Indiana Silver Jackets to engage young professionals and active teens to the safety message. Today’s messages have to draw people in and engage the viewer with short concise and impactful messaging.
