Hiring Crisis in Law Enforcement

Hiring law enforcement officers today is a difficult task nationwide. A panel of state representatives involved in the hiring strategies for their agencies will discuss the processes and tactics they use and will discuss the successes they've seen and the challenges they face.  

Gary Klein

Captain, Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission

Captain Gary Klein works for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Division of Law Enforcement and is responsible for the Waterway Management team within the Boating and Waterways Section. He has served in this capacity since 2013. Gary was selected as Florida’s Boating Law Administrator in 2017. Previously, he served as a field Captain responsible for FWC’s law enforcement operations in Nassau, Duval (Jacksonville), Clay, Bradford and Baker Counties within Florida for seven years.

With more than 25 years of fish, wildlife and boating law enforcement experience, his current professional role includes oversight of Florida’s waterway management efforts. This involves coordinating with other state, local and federal agencies on boating restricted areas, participating in the development of state and federal boating-related legislation, and consensus-building with a wide variety of stakeholders.

Prior to joining the FWC, Captain Klein obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill.While serving as an Officer with FWC, Captain Klein completed law school at Florida State University. He then served as a prosecutor in the 4th Judicial Circuit (Jacksonville).

Originally from the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Gary has now lived in Florida for the last 28 years.

Captain Stephanie Weatherington began her career as a Wildlife Officer with Arkansas Game and Fish in 1995. In 2003, she became the BLA and is currently the longest-serving BLA in NASBLA. Throughout the years she has served and Chaired on the Law Enforcement Committee, BAIRAC (now ERAC) Committee, VIRT Committee, and currently serves as the Chair of NASBLA’s Search Committee. In 2013, she was elected to the NASBLA Executive Board and served in all capacities including becoming President in 2017.
