Paddle Patrol Officer Training
The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department Law Enforcement Division is committed to safety by providing the necessary skills, abilities, and knowledge to prevent personal injuries and damage or loss of state property. In 2021, TPWD implemented mandatory training for officers using paddlecraft for patrol purposes. The course provides the knowledge and skills necessary to patrol using a human powered vessel including paddle strokes and maneuvers, technical gear knowledge, environment, patrol considerations and rescues.

Kimberly Sorensen is the Boater Education Manager at Texas Parks and Wildlife, and a passionate advocate for boating safety and outdoor recreation. Kimberly attended the NASBLA Leadership Academy in 2021, serves as the current chair of the Boater Education Advisory Panel (BEAP), and is an active member of the NASBLA Education and Outreach Committee, where she works tirelessly to promote educational initiatives and engage with boating enthusiasts across the nation. The TPWD boater education program certifies approximately 36,000 students per year through online and in-person courses. The program utilizes social media platforms, newsletters, outreach, and education opportunities to reach recreational boaters in Texas.
Kimberly's love for the outdoors is evident in her personal pursuits. An avid paddler, boater, and outdoor recreation enthusiast, she spends her free time fly fishing the scenic rivers of the Texas Hill Country and boating on the beautiful lakes of Texas. Her love of boating and fishing came from her dad. For as long as she can remember, she has been on the water with a fishing pole in her hand. Enjoying time in the outdoors with her family and sharing that love with the next generation drives her passion for boating safety. Her dedication to both her profession and her hobbies showcases her commitment to fostering a safer and more enjoyable experience for all who venture onto the water.
