Using Data and Science to Craft Wake Regulations
Emotions can run high when it comes to boating conflicts, with the role of wakes being especially contentious. Science backed up by real-world data can help in crafting and enforcing fair boating laws. In this session we will discuss the results of field measurements of wakes from various boats and modes of operation and their potential impacts on shorelines in both deep- and shallow-water settings. This field data will be compared to more recent findings using Computational Fluid Dynamics. The significance of boat wakes on shoreline erosion will be discussed in the context of other phenomena such as wind-driven waves.
